Keeping up appearances
is what we do
Whilst on the inside
our mood is completely blue
π
We smile and chat
as if all is fine
The reality is not
so benign
π
We are the jester
all happy and content
but in our mind
we are suffering anguish and
torment
π
We all need to learn
to look beyond the smile
So the real mood we see
rather than the guile
Ahhh yes, our faces and masks can be so deceiving!!

Oh, my, yes! I admit I can be quite adept at masking. It’s so hard to let others in. But, so important. Very well written, Stuart.

I can never hide my emotions, personally. There’s no context in which I don’t show what I’m feeling. It’s really unsettling to be around people who are obviously masking their emotionsβ I can usually tell, and it makes them seem dishonest. Sets me on edge!

I can hide mine very well…..which is a blessing and a curse I think! π

Hmm, from my biased and stubborn viewpoint I can never see it as a good thing. Why do you want to hide them?

I always have. Childhood stuff that Iβve never fully recovered from. Itβs all part of my challenges in life!
I try and show more emotion but my programming takes some rewiring! π

Ah, I see, totally understand :). I’ve met other people with a similar issue.
For some reason, my childhood issues caused me to express myself More, so in fact I have the opposite problem! Possibly because my close family were so UNexpressive, and would never perceive my emotions correctly, so I had to be very free and expressive with my emotions to try to get them across. Or maybe I’ve simply always lacked inhibition. For sure it made a lot of situations worse!

I think we all deal with them differently and have our own unique coping mechanism.
This is what makes us awesome unique individuals!

In fact it would cause me great distress to attempt to hide them! I can’t help but be expressive. I guess not having that strong urge would make it easier to hide emotions, and so perhaps you naturally would in some situations.

Even though I donβt do it, I think being more expressive is better. Itβs something I need to learn and Iβm working on it!

Cool, understood! Thanks for being open about it π. I think your writing here will definitely help with that! What you’ve said makes your poems and expressiveness even more impressive to me, now.

I call this “packaging”. The more concealing the package, the more difficult for someone to know what is on the inside. It’s what we all do to appear as if everything is perfect. But everything is not alright most of the time. Well written poem.
